The first book in the Rosedale Investigations series finds Wayne Nichols, our doggedly determined Detective, and his sassy and irreverent partner, Dory Clarkson, starting new jobs as private investigators. Their first client, Cara Summerfield, comes with what appears to be a missing person’s case. Cara got pregnant in high school and baby Danny was adopted. Her husband, Grant, an up-and-coming politician has never been told about the pregnancy. Their only clue is an unreadable return address on a letter sent to Cara from Danny’s girlfriend. Danny is now a racehorse trainer and has been assaulted for non-payment of gambling debts. Cara charges Rosedale Investigations to find Danny and keep his existence completely confidential. When Danny is found, he’s in the ICU and not expected to live. When he passes away, it appears to the pathologist to be natural causes, but Detective Nichols doesn’t buy it. It looks like murder to him.

Blind Switch definition: A horse being caught in a pocket behind or between horses which prevents a free course from being pursued.

Not sure about other readers, but this gave me “the feels” just from the synopsis alone.

Prologue, Saturday, October 5th, opens with our Danny, Daniel Kidd Parrish, initially lying to his girlfriend Tracey about his gambling problems after coming home from working as a horse trainer at the racehorse tracks. Owing $15k to a bookie who wanted what he was owed in a week.

One option would be to ask his birth mother, Cara Summerfield, was married to a very successful lawyer. Grant, who had aspirations of a lengthy political career.

Wayne Nichols, is our recently retired Homicide Detective and newly hired into Rosedale Investigations, working for another retired Homicide Detective, Patrick Devlin Pascoe.

Cara contacts the investigative office to find her son, Danny, when a letter shows up in her mail from Tracey outlining the debt and requesting her help. Immediately wanting to help only to find out, too late. When Danny dies in intensive care, it looks like murder to Detective Wayne Nichols but the pathologist won’t list a cause of death, Nashville PD stalls, and the killer remains elusive.

Billie Jo Bradley, part secretary, part college student gives a breath of fresh, or youthful in this case, air into some effects of their mystery solving case. Giving Wayne an idea to ask his best friend, Miss Dory Clarkson to shed some light and help as well in the investigation. Dory was an investigator as well who also had just recently retired from the sheriff’s office.

The author brings a variety of characters and depth into her writing. Chapters vary POVs throughout and offer layers that you sift through as you delve deeper into the rabbit whole filtering out the “who dun it”. One thing I thoroughly enjoyed about the writing style is that the book tracks each chapter with the timelines with when things are occurring. So, after the prologue, which was a Saturday, our actual book and chapters opens on a Monday. Looking forward to the continuance of this series.
