Barnes & Nobles had a science-themed event in-store one weekend in November that was geared towards kids. My kids had such a blast there that we ended up going every day! One of the tables in the kid area was covered with magnetic building block pieces and my kids spent quite a bit of time going back to this table over the course of the days we attended the events. After seeing how much fun my kids had using their imaginations to build various objects I knew exactly what I wanted to get them.
The set comes with squares, rectangles, triangles, two giant hexagons, two wheel sets, plastic squares to cover holes (dependent on what you build), a sticker set for the squares and a guide book. Of note is that the guide book only contains pictures for ideas but, no step-by-step instructions on how to build them. Easy to figure out though and, besides, I find it more fun to use our imaginations to create things. The book has a picture of an electronic component for a few of the designs; the kit did not come with this.
All the pieces are solidly constructed and the magnets truly keep everything aligned even when using the wheels to create an in-motion object. The magnets are on each flat side and can be used 270°; basically, every side except the inside.
I love how much my kids would rather build, read, tinker and use their imaginations rather than be “plugged in”. These magnetic building blocks have not only increased physical skills but, increased the amount of time they are playing and working together as a team.
I also highly recommend the 4DBlocks if you are looking to get sensory-based toys for all age brackets and skill levels. Beginning age bracket is 3 years old; all the pieces are over 1″ in diameter. Having 10-year old twins, one of which has a learning disability, and a very active 7-year old, I have a broad array of imagination going on in my house. The company, 4DBlocks , has a motto: “Play it, Love it” and they sure do!
Disclosure: I received this magnetic building block set for free from 4DBlocks however; this in no way influenced my review but, I chose to write this review and was under no obligation to do so. I only write honest reviews regardless of whether I purchased a product at full price, at a discount, or received it free.
